Understanding Cholesterol
What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your blood. Your body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, but high levels can increase your risk of heart disease.
Types of Cholesterol
- HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein): "Good" cholesterol that helps remove other forms of cholesterol from your bloodstream. Higher is better (β₯60 mg/dL optimal).
- LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein): "Bad" cholesterol that can build up in artery walls. Lower is better (<100 mg/dL optimal).
- Triglycerides: A type of fat in your blood. High levels increase heart disease risk (<150 mg/dL normal).
- VLDL: Very low-density lipoprotein, another type of "bad" cholesterol.
Cholesterol Ratio Guidelines
- <3.5: Optimal - Excellent heart health
- 3.5-5.0: Normal - Good heart health
- 5.0-6.0: Moderate Risk - Lifestyle changes recommended
- >6.0: High Risk - Medical consultation advised
