About Pregnancy Weight Gain

Why Weight Gain Matters

Appropriate weight gain during pregnancy is crucial for your baby's development and your health. Gaining too little can lead to low birth weight and premature birth, while gaining too much increases risks of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and delivery complications.

Where Does the Weight Go?

Baby: 3-4 kg (7-8 lbs)
Placenta: 0.7 kg (1.5 lbs)
Amniotic fluid: 0.9 kg (2 lbs)
Breast tissue: 0.9 kg (2 lbs)
Blood volume: 1.8 kg (4 lbs)
Fat stores: 2.7-3.6 kg (6-8 lbs)

Special Considerations

  • Twins: Recommended gain is 17-25 kg (37-54 lbs) for normal BMI
  • Adolescents may need to gain at the higher end of the range
  • Women with eating disorders need specialized care
  • Previous pregnancy complications may affect recommendations
