About Roof Pitch

What is Roof Pitch?

Roof pitch is the steepness or slope of a roof, typically expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. For example, a 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. It can also be expressed in degrees or as a percentage.

How to Use

  1. Select your measurement unit (feet or meters)
  2. Enter the rise (vertical height) and run (horizontal distance)
  3. Optionally enter roof dimensions for area calculation
  4. View pitch ratio, angle, percentage, and other calculations
  5. Use common pitches for quick reference
  6. Click copy buttons to copy specific values

Roof Pitch Categories

  • Low Slope (0-10°): Nearly flat, requires special roofing materials
  • Conventional (10-20°): Common for residential roofs, easy to walk on
  • Medium Slope (20-35°): Standard residential pitch, good water drainage
  • Steep Slope (35-45°): Excellent drainage, more difficult to install
  • Very Steep (45°+): Dramatic appearance, challenging to work on

Standard Pitch Notation

In the US, roof pitch is commonly expressed as a ratio with 12 as the run (e.g., 6/12, 8/12). This represents the rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch is also called a "6 in 12" pitch and equals approximately 26.57 degrees.
